Official Commemorative Minted Medallion
Coin
In Memory of "The King" Elvis Presley 1935 - 1977
The only Limited Edition
Medallion Coin ever minted was struck for an American company in 1977 by
the Sherrit Mint in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. This is one
of only two mints in Canada which fabricate coins and medallion coins, the other
being The Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg, Manitoba. These two mints supply
coins and medallion coins to private companies and to government treasuries the
world over.
These medallion coins
were minted in 1977 and were purchased as a "hoard" by a private
collector in 1978. To the best of his knowledge this initial and only production
was 5000 medallion coins; there is no evidence there there ever was a subsequent
production run.
The total market
population is therefore estimated at 5,000 medallion coins. The whereabouts of
the remaining 4,675 is not known to the collector; to the best of the
collector's knowledge, no other Elvis Presley Commemorative Medallion Coins have
come on to the market since he acquired them 22 years ago.
The production cost,
which includes the amortized cost of the die, is estimated (in 1798 prices) to
have been around $75,000 or $15 each.
An estimate of market value can be found below. This is based on the March, 2000 retail value of certain representative U.S. Government Gold Commemorative Coins, all but one of which had a far greater initial "population" than the estimated 5,000 pieces of the 1977 Elvis Presley Official Commemorative Medallion Coin offered here.

Inside on LH side these comments under the heading:
"A Legend in His Own Time"
"Elvis Presley started his adult life as a truck driver. It was not long however before his singing talents were recognized and he became "the King" of a new musical trend - Rock 'n' Roll. Throughout his life, Elvis remained "The King". Forty-five of his records sold more than one million copies each - Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, and It's Now or Never - being a few. Besides rock, Elvis also sand love ballads in a manner that only he could. Love Me Tender, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Crying in the Chapel will live forever in testimony of this.
His versatility was evidenced by his appearance in 31 films in most of which he played the starring role. The private side of Elvis showed him to be deeply religious. He recorded several gospel music albums.
Elvis served a term in the U.S. Army and married the daughter of an officer in 1967 - one child was born of the marriage, a daughter.
The King of Rock 'n' Roll was also a philanthropist donating to many charities and to individuals who were not as fortunate as himself.
With the untimely passing of Elvis Presley, an era is ended. To many millions it spells the end of youth. However, the legend will live on. Elvis "The King" Presley will become a legend for all time."
Inside on the RH side an indented card containing the front of the medallion coin inset, the face of Elvis with the script:
