Comparison of the Elvis
Presley Limited Edition Medallion Coin
with Selected U.S. Gold Commemorative Coins - March, 2000
OVERVIEW
In response to interest in the Canada-minted Elvis Presley (1935 - 1977) Commemorative Coin struck in 1977, the collector has done some research on the only possible comparatives. In the paragraphs below, he compares the present (March 2000) market conditions for investment-grade U.S. Gold Commemorative Coins (Mint State = "MS-65") with the Elvis "The King" Presley Medallion Coins.
Both the Elvis Presley Commemorative Medallion Coins and U.S. Commemorative Coins are a mirror of history and art that tell the American story and the evolution of its musical culture over the past 200 years, reflecting both social and economic triumphs and struggles. Those who treat this rare Commemorative Medallion Coin (as well as U.S. rare coins of course!) with the consideration it deserves will profit from the joy of ownership and in many other ways, including a sound financial return on their investment of time and money.
For purposes of comparison only with the U.S. coin collector's market, an investor or collector should look out for key market factors when evaluating medallions and coins: these are (1) Supply/Demand (2) Market Valuation (3) Growth Trends and (4) Public Appeal. After looking into these areas, (again, we are talking only of United States commemorative coins), you'll be better equipped to determine the extent of the market for the Elvis Presley Medallion coin and to what degree expectations of accelerating growth in value are warranted in this altogether new market.
(1) Supply / Demand
U.S. Gold Commemorative Coins have extremely low original mintages - an average of 12,000 and typically would range from a low of 5,000 (for the 1922 Grant $1) to a high of 45,019 (for the 1922 Sesquicentennial $2½). In the highest grades total known populations in MS - 65 averages 557 specimens per issue and only 58 coins per issue in the MS - 67 grade! Because of (i) their low original mintage and (ii) low surviving population, these commemorative coins have broad market appeal to both coin collectors and to investors.
The original and only mintage of the Elvis Presley Commemorative Medallion Coin is thought to be 5,000 pieces only. The specimens offered for sale are uncirculated and all of them remain in their original packaging. These are as follows:
| Nickel (bright silver finish) in wallets | 135 |
| Gold-plated nickel in coin holders | 190 |
Whilst their MS-grade cannot be warranted it is fairly certain that they would all be accorded grade MS-65 or higher due to the fact that the horde has remained intact with the original acquirer. They were acquired "uncirculated" by the collector in 1978, the year after they were struck.
As a result of the very limited supply and what is anticipated to be a growing and world-wide collector demand, particularly from global Elvis Presley Fan Club members and memorabilia collectors, it is anticipated that price levels will move sharply up in the next few months.
